The new Information professionals are here

Librarianship is a scholarly profession with promise

HI-TECH LIBRARY: An automatic book issue machine

In the present global economy, the future of a country is tied up with knowledge-leveraged growth. The prime movers to achieve such growth are (i) education, (ii) research, and (iii) communication. A formidable infrastructure in education, reinforced with well-knit communication and dissemination work-out, is sine qua non for knowledge-based growth. Life and living all around today is virtually under the grip of information and communication. The unlimited information flow has to be managed and systematically transformed into a useful input. As such, automation of library is the need of the hour worldwide for online access to books, journals and allied material.
The work culture in libraries is changing fast. Cyber libraries are happening; packed with digital documents, CDs and books. Newspapers, journals, textbooks and reference books, all will be on CD-ROMs and digital multimedia. Publishers like Penguin have started issuing classics on CD. Great books of India and are made available on internet. Libraries will soon possess even robots (with artificial intelligence) and other such machines which will perform various services for the readers. Paper-library and paperless-library will co-exist. Low-cost, light-weight electronic book-readers, with built-in modem, will be used more conveniently, instead of PC.
Several libraries are being connected for resource sharing. Information like research findings; data; databases; online yellow pages; electronic mail services; investment guides; travel guidelines with related maps; educational and career guidance and the like can easily be retrieved. As publishing is now moving on to digital-media formats, library likewise needs to advance its devices and networking to make use of the digital materials. The collection is stored and maintained in computer-accessible form and accessed digitally through computer networking, regardless of the location of libraries. The process makes well-ordered, instant information-retrieval possible, globally. People are getting net-savvy and so is the demand for online digital information service increasing manifold swiftly.
For Indian libraries, digital movement is lagging far behind, primarily due to financial limitation and compulsion. The old systems of acquisition, storage, organisation and dissemination are giving way and becoming obsolete. The present library is is more ‘service-adept' and less ‘resource-oriented.' Likewise, the staff has to be technically accomplished. Today, a Librarian (no, Information Professional) functions as “navigator” and filler of information to intellectual reserves, with the help of search engines, e-resources, digitalisation and tools like Gopher, FTP, Telnet, Unix, MS-Office, Windows, Linux etc.
Jobs Jobs in library consists of also budgeting, accounting, acquisition of collection, organisation and management of the institution, besides rendering service to readers. In the areas of self-education, distant learning and online schooling, the library is indispensable. The training courses in the profession have been designed to meet emerging requirements and challenges. Currently, following levels of education and courses in LISc are held by the universities:
Bachelor of Library and B.LI.Sc Information Science (admission requirement: degree in any discipline)
Master of Library and M.LI.Sc Information Science (truncated course-one year M.LI.Sc.) (admission requirement: B.L.I.Sc.)
Master of Library and M.L.I.Sc. Information Science (Integrated Course) (admission requirement: degree in any discipline).
Master of Library and M.L.I.Sc Information Science (Bachelor degree in any discipline with Library and Information Science as one of the optional subjects).
Certificate course in Library Science of three to six month duration is conducted at some places by Library Associations, for higher secondary students to work as librarian in a small library. Knowledge of foreign languages is an advantage in this profession.
A knowledgeable librarian works as a guide, making the reader aware of the relevant literature, like any other teacher. In academic libraries, library professional's grades and status have therefore, been prescribed by the UGC at par with those of teachers of the universities and colleges. University Librarian, D.y Librarian and Assistant Librarian are placed in the pay-scales of University Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor respectively, provided they possess qualification at par with those of the teachers, as prescribed by the UGC. In the institutions of science and technology and scientific research also, library professionals are treated at par with those of the corresponding scientists. Job satisfaction of librarians of these institutions of learning and research are quite satisfactory. In public libraries, however, librarians' grades are not uniform and satisfactory. Grades differ from State to state and much needs to be done to ameliorate the conditions of the staff of these libraries.
With increased emphasis on spread of literacy and education, and a good number of new Universities, IITs, engineering colleges, business and management schools and industrial establishments coming up, the job-market for library professionals looks good in the public and private sectors.
Regarded as a noble, soft profession, it is much suited to women, assisting the information-seekers, especially children. Women make good children librariana. Here, she is not only distributor of books but also an affectionate friend to children, a mentor and guide.

Library of Congress and Ad Council Team Up with Reading is Fundamental to Launch Public Service Advertising Campaign to Encourage Parents to Read to their Children

press releases
WASHINGTONApril 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Research shows that success in school and life starts with literacy. When children become good readers in the early grades, they are more likely to become better learners throughout their school years and beyond. In a nationwide effort to communicate to parents the importance of reading to their school-aged children, the Library of Congress and the Ad Council have teamed up with Reading is Fundamental (RIF) to launch a new national public service advertising (PSA) campaign, "Book People Unite."
Created by advertising agency, Mother New York, the new television, print, outdoor and digital PSAs feature a medley of notable book characters, including Pinocchio, Madeline, Humpty Dumpty, Curious George and Raggedy Ann and Andy coming together to encourage parents to "Read to a child today and spark a lifetime of ambition."  The original song in the television PSA was produced by Grammy award-winning band The Roots. Celebrity vocalists Jack BlackChris Martin (Coldplay), John Legend, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Jason Schwartzman, Consequence, Regina SpektorNate Ruess (fun.), Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia) and Melanie Fiona lend their voices to the song.
"The Library of Congress is so pleased to continue its longstanding collaboration with the Ad Council and to join this effort with RIF," said Gayle Osterberg, director of communications at the Library of Congress. "As America's oldest cultural institution, the Library encourages the use and enjoyment of our nation's creativity and knowledge. We hope this entertaining campaign – combining beloved children's book characters and world-renowned musical talent - inspires families to establish a lifelong love of reading."
All of the PSAs direct audiences to a new campaign micro-site, BookPeopleUnite.org, where they can join the Book People Unite movement by taking the pledge to love reading and declare themselves a "book person." Each person who pledges will receive a free download of the song featured in the PSA. The site also features access toLibrary of Congress and RIF's respective web sites where people can find great tips and advice for reading with their children.
"For more than twelve years we have partnered with the Library of Congress to promote literacy in all types of learning," said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. "Our new campaign with RIF, featuring many of the notable book characters we all grew up with, will encourage parents to establish positive reading practices with their children. We hope that families will understand that reading is fun. All it takes is a few minutes a day to inspire your children to become lifelong readers."
The characters in the television PSA were brought to life through specially-crafted puppets by Jim Henson's Creature shop and Curious Pictures created the animated characters. Additionally Emmy award-winning actorLeVar Burton makes a special cameo in the television PSA and talks about why he is a Book Person in one of the radio PSAs.
"One book can spark a lifetime of ambition and we are asking the nation to join us in igniting a culture of reading where all kids can explore, dream and achieve," said Carol Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. "This PSA is part of our campaign to unite a community of people who believe in the transformative power of books and are committed to this critical cause. Together, we can realize our vision of a literate America."
"We can all point to one or many books that fueled our childhood adventures. Without RIF these windows of adventure that books open every day may close to those most in need.  We were astonished when we heard from RIF that in some of the lowest-income neighborhoods in the US there is only one book available for every 300 children," said Phil Graham, Co-Head of Strategy of Mother New York. "We hope that this campaign will spark a reading revolution in America and a greater recognition on the vital role books play in kick-starting children to a lifetime of literacy."
Since 2000, the Ad Council has partnered with the Library of Congress on a national Reading campaign. The campaign targets children aged eight to twelve in an effort to inspire fun and promote literacy in all types of learning, including reading books, magazines and cartoons, online and interactive tools, visiting museums, creating music and using one's imagination. To date, the campaign has received over $388 million in donated media support.
Per the Ad Council model, the PSAs will be distributed to media outlets nationwide this week and will run and air in advertising time that is donated by the media.

Vatican and Bodleian libraries to offer rare collections online

Greek manuscripts and earliest surviving Hebrew codex among 1.5m pages to be digitised for both scholars and public to peruse
Vatican Library

Six centuries after it was founded by Pope Nicholas V for "the common convenience of the learned", the treasures of the Vatican library are to become accessible to scholars and the public alike via the internet.
Greek manuscripts of works by Homer and Plato, perhaps the earliest Hebrew codex in existence and scores of early printed Italian books are among thousands of texts that will be made freely available online by theBiblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (BAV) and Oxford University's Bodleian library.
Over the next four years, the two institutions plan to digitise 1.5m pages from their collections and in doing so reunite texts that have been dispersed for centuries.
The joint project, funded by a £2m grant from the Polonsky charitable foundation, will allow academic researchers and the public to pore over documents from the comfort of their own desks and sofas.
Two-thirds of the material will come from the Vatican library, which was founded in 1451, and which houses more than 1.6m printed books and 180,000 manuscripts.
The remaining pages will come from the Bodleian, which was opened a 151 years later, and which now holds more than 11m printed items.
The digitised collections will fall into three groups: Greek manuscripts; 15th-century printed books (or incunabula), and Hebrew manuscripts and early printed books. The university said the categories had been chosen "for the strength of the collections in both libraries and their importance for scholarship in their respective fields".
Among the other texts to be digitised and put online are works by Sophocles and Hippocrates, a copy of the entire bible written in Italyaround 1100, and volumes of biblical, Kabbalah and Talmudic commentary.
Sarah Thomas, Bodley's Librarian, said the project would help "transcend the limitations of time and space" that had stymied academic research in the past".
She added: "Scholars will be able to interrogate these documents in fresh approaches as a result of their online availability. Today's world – and tomorrow's – is one of global connectedness."
Monsignor Cesare Pasini, the prefect of the BAV, described the collaboration as "a great step forward in the Vatican library's entry into the digital age", adding: "With this joint initiative, the two libraries continue to accomplish their mission for the benefit of science and culture; it represents a great step forward in the Vatican library's entry into the digital age."
Dr Leonard Polonsky, whose eponymous foundation has supported previous efforts to digitise the Bodleian, said the grant would make important collections available to scholars and members of the public all over the world.
He added: "Twenty-first century technology provides the opportunity for collaborations between cultural institutions in the way they manage, disseminate and make available for research the information, knowledge and expertise they hold."

Pune's library by kids, for kids (Daily Bhaskar)

Pune: In the neighbourhood of the teenage suspects who had kidnapped and brutally murdered Shubham Shirke in Dighi on March 31, resides seven-year-old Mahi Milind Shinde who every parent and citizens should be proud of.
This shining star of Alandi Road has started the Sparkle Club Library with 16 children from the area. Realising the dearth of a library in the vicinity, she launched the club on April 1 after planning for two months with her brother Gautam (11). Later, Ananya (7), her cousin, also joined them.
The club members comprising a four-year-old, the youngest member, and the eldest being 10 years old meet at the balcony of Mahi’s house at Ram Housing Society from 4 pm to 8 pm every day. They spend four hours reading books like the biography of Mother Teresa, children encyclopaedia and fairy tales.  Mahi teaches them skits and storytelling, while Gautam hones their stage puppet show skills.
To become a club member, one has to fill a form giving details like name, address, age, phone number along with parents’ consent. The membership fee is Rs 50 per month.
Her supportive parents — father Milind, a manager with Kalyani Car Painting Special Steel at Mundhwa and mother Gautami, an interior designer — have lent her around 200 books for the library.
“I was craving to start a club for the past two months. One day, I woke up at 1 am and walked into my parents’ bedroom weeping. My parents suggested that I can use the balcony of our house for the purpose. Then I talked to the children in the neighbourhood. Eight-year-old Shruti Pitalelu became the first member and once we started having fun, other children too wanted to join,” Mahi said.
Gautami said, “Mahi has leadership qualities. That is why her club could get so many members in 10 days. We never thought that she would be able to do it so well.”
Adam Konoth (7) who became a member after coming to know about the club while visiting his grandmother, said, “My grandma used to tell me stories. Now I tell her stories.”

The Queens Library on Thursday will become the first public library system in New York to lend e-readers, a shift that underscores how libraries are adapting to help patrons keep up with technology.
All three of New York's public library systems—the Queens Library, the Brooklyn Public Library and the New York Public Library, which serves Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx—already lend e-books to patrons who read them on their own e-readers, computers and mobile devices.
Now the Queens Library is launching a pilot program making 50 Nooks—e-readers made by Barnes & Noble—available for check out at its Central Library in Jamaica.
Each will be preloaded with 25 e-books in one of five genres: children's literature, teen books, mystery, romance, and best sellers. Fifty works of classic literature also will be loaded onto each device.
"It's what libraries do," said library President Thomas Galante. "They loan people things to access information."
In the past several years, that has come to mean providing access to computers with broadband Internet, and offering free Wi-Fi. Now, it means helping people who can't afford to buy an e-book, Mr. Galante said.
Officials at the Brooklyn and New York public libraries said they are considering lending e-readers as well.
In the Queens Library's pilot program, any patron with a library card and a photo ID can check out an e-book for 21 days, with the option to renew twice. No deposit or credit card is required. The devices will be locked; patrons won't be able to browse or download any online content.
Mr. Galante said ultimately, the library hopes to offer proprietary e-readers that are linked to the Queens Library's e-book offerings the way, for example, a Kindle provides access to Amazon's e-book offerings. He said he has been in discussions on the subject with e-book manufacturers and content providers, but the necessary technology is not yet available.

Oxford University, Vatican libraries to digitize works

Oxford University, Vatican libraries to digitize works
The Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (BAV) said on Thursday they intended to digitize 1.5 million pages of ancient texts and make them freely available online. The libraries said the digitized collections will centre on three subject areas: Greek manuscripts, 15th-century printed books and Hebrew manuscripts and early printed books. The areas have been chosen for the strength of the collections in both libraries and their importance for scholarship in their respective fields.

With approximately two-thirds of the material coming from the BAV and the remainder from the Bodleian, the digitization effort will also benefit scholars by uniting virtually materials that have been dispersed between the collections for centuries. "Transforming these ancient texts and images into digital form helps transcend the limitations of time and space which have in the past restricted access to knowledge," Bodley's librarian Sarah Thomas said.

"Scholars will be able to interrogate these documents in fresh approaches as a result of their online availability." The initiative has been made possible by a 2 million pound ($3.17 million) award from the Polonsky Foundation.

"The service to humanity which the Vatican Library has accomplished over almost six centuries, by preserving its cultural treasures and making them available to readers, finds here a new avenue which confirms and amplifies its universal vocation through the use of new tools, thanks to the generosity of the Polonsky Foundation and to the sharing of expertise with the Bodleian Libraries," Holy See Librarian Cardinal Raffaele Farina said.

Dr Babita Jaiswal
Librarianship as a profession provides a variety of employment opportunities. Today there are a number of career prospects in Library and Information Science. The qualified professionals are employed in various libraries and information Centers. Trained library professionals can find opportunities for employment both as teacher and as a Librarian. In fact, it is possible to choose the kind of library to suit one’s interest and background. In Librarianship, designations could be Librarian, Documentation Officer, Assistant Librarian, Deputy Librarian, Scientist (Library Science/ Documentation), Library and Information Officer, Knowledge Manager/ Officer, Information Executive, Director/Head of Library Services, Information Officer, and Information Analyst.

The role of libraries in providing widespread and inclusive access to knowledge is widely acknowledged. In today’s context, libraries have to play two distinct roles - to serve as a local centre of information and knowledge, and be a local gateway to national and global knowledge. Some of the issues under consideration of National Knowledge Commission are:
  • institutional framework of libraries;
  • networking;
  • education, training and research;
  • modernization and computerization of libraries;
  • maintenance of private and personal collections and
  • staff requirements to meet changing needs.
This commission has recommended the formation for the National Library Commission to strengthen the Library networks in India. The Department of Culture (DoC) has proposed setting up a National Mission for Libraries (NML) as a Central Sector Scheme. The NML will cover libraries under the DoC and the activities under it will include: National Census of Libraries; Modernisation including networking of Libraries under DoC; establishing Knowledge Centres and Digital Libraries. Recently under National Mission for Libraries there is a proposal for establishing 7000 libraries having computers with internet facility across the country.

It was recommended that the initial recruitment should be direct at the level of library and Information Assistant. The qualification requirement would be graduation and BLISc degree.
Thus, the scope of librarianship becomes brighter. Career in LIS is multidimensional, ever growing bright and significantly enriching the knowledge base of the society for prosperity and progress.

Courses in LIS
  • Certificate course in Library and Information science (CLISc or CLIB)  Eligibility 10+2
  • Diploma course in Library and Information Science (DLISC or DLIB) Eligibility 10+2
  • Bachelor in Library and information science (BLISC or B.LIB) Eligibility Graduate in any discipline from recognized University

So some universities provide degree i.e. Bachelor in  library and Information Science(BLISC), and Masters in Library and information Science (MLISC), M.Phil in Library and Information science and Ph.D in Library and Information Science and some provide degrees like Bachelor in  library Science(B.LIB), and Master in Library Science (M.LIB), M.Phil in Library and Information science  and Ph.D in Library Science)
The computer and information technology is now being widely used in libraries and information centers to process, store, retrieve and disseminate information. NISCAIR under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi conducts a two-year programme leading to the award of Associateship in Information Science (AIS) and the Documentations Research and Training Centre (DRTC) at the Indian Statistical Institute (Bangalore) offer Associateship in Documentation and Information Science (ADIS).This award is also recognised as equivalent to MLISc degree. These two courses enjoy a good reputation in the employment market. In view of the increasing use of computer and information technology in libraries, several universities in India also have started various courses focusing primarily on information technology and computer.
