The University of British Columbia Library is one of the largest academic libraries in Canada, ranked 14th among the Association of Research Libraries.  UBC Library has 14 branches and divisions, two campuses (Vancouver and Kelowna), one off-site hospital library, and the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre - a multi-purpose teaching and learning facility.

The Library’s collection of over 7M items includes 1.4M ebooks, 229,020 electronic journals, 850,000 maps, audio, DVD/video and graphic materials, and 1, 703 bibliographic and fulltext databases.

More than 300 knowledgeable employees – librarians, management and professional staff, support staff and student staff – provide users with the excellent resources and services that they need to further their research, teaching and learning.

The David Lam Library and Canaccord Learning Commons is located in the Sauder School of Business and provides collections and research support in the areas of commerce and business administration. The print collection encompasses over 30,000 volumes and millions of electronic articles and other documents. It covers all facets of business management and is an important resource for students and academic researchers, as well as members of the business community. OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
The David Lam Management Research Library provides reference, information, bibliographic and circulation services in support of undergraduates, graduate students and faculty of the Sauder School of Business and to others.  The Head is responsible for providing the leadership necessary to develop facilities, collections, and programs including the organization, administration, and operation of services.  Within the context of a changing environment, the Head will facilitate the planning for and implementation of a service model which focuses on meeting user needs by the provision of information, consulting services, and instructional programs delivered by reference and other library staff.
In addition to the David Lam Library, the Head also retains responsibility for co-curricular services and programs delivered by the Canaccord Learning Commons and the Wayne Deans Investment Analysis Centre. These include support for writing, first-year math, equipment lending, digital media studio, a speaker series, academic support services, and training on finance and accounting databases, datasets and tools.
The nature and scope of responsibilities for this and other library positions are expected to change as the Library organization evolves and financial restraint continues.

qualifications:

A graduate degree from an accredited program in Library or Information Science and an academic background in commerce and business administration or equivalent knowledge gained through professional experience in these subject areas is required.  Demonstrated effective managerial experience including supervising a staff of librarians, support staff and student workers. Proven leadership and experience with projects, budget management and planning; and significant collaborations within a network of internal and external partnerships.  Relevant professional experience, familiarity with business information sources, faculty-library liaison, electronic services, collection development and library instruction as well as commitment to responsive and innovative information services are essential. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, ability to lead change and collaboration with librarian and faculty colleagues. 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Head of the David Lam Library works under the general direction of and reports within the portfolio of the Associate University Librarian - Research Services. The Head works closely with the Senior Associate Dean, Faculty and Research, Sauder School of Business particularly on budget matters and the initiation of new programs The Head supervises a team of liaison librarians, manager of the Canaccord Learning Commons, co-ordinator of the Sauder Investment Analysis Centre, and support staff. The Head consults with the Associate University Librarian Collections Management concerning purchases of Library materials and collections building, the Head, the Director of Finance and Facilities for financial and facilities matters, and the Director, Human Resources on matters relating to staff.  The Head will be responsible for the organization and operation of services within the parameters of the Library’s operational needs as determined by the Associate University Librarian.  This position collaborates extensively with the librarians and staff from other units within the Library, staff and faculty members at the Sauder School, as well as other stakeholders at UBC. The Head ensures that relevant issues are discussed with the Dean of the Sauder School, the Senior Associate Dean, Faculty and Research or other administrators within the Faculty. duties:
In consultation with the Associate University Librarian (AUL) and the Associate Dean, Sauder School of Business, provides leadership for the operations of the David Lam Library, Canaccord Learning Commons and Wayne Deans Investment Analysis Centre, so that they contribute successfully to the UBC Library and Sauder School’s vision and mission. 
  1. Develops and implements goals and objectives that support the UBC Library’s strategic plan.
  2. Provides leadership for the librarians, M&P and CUPE staff in David Lam Library and Canaccord Learning Commons.
  3. Assesses needs of library users and opportunities for new services by consulting with users; keeping up with changes in curriculum, program development and new areas of research, maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders.  Ensures consultation with the Library on new/changed courses and curriculum.
  4. Prepares and monitors budgets, allocates and is accountable for the use of resources.  This includes setting unit priorities in consultation with staff and users.
  5. Works closely with the AUL and Director, Human Resources, on personnel issues, including recruitment of new staff and staff development and training.  Manages the performance review cycle for staff, including the development and review of job descriptions, annual setting of goals and objectives and conducting annual reviews.
  6. Oversees the development of collections ensuring that faculty and students are consulted on a regular basis.  Ensures that librarians consult with interested faculty about collection development, including participation in the Sauder School’s data committee.
  7. In consultation with users and Central Technical Services oversees the management of the physical collections in the David Lam Library including the development of criteria for the transfer of materials to storage and weeding.
8.       Creates and maintains a supportive, positive and effective work environment for staff and users, creating an environment within The David Lam Library that is collegial and based on mutual trust and respect.
  1. Supports the University Librarian and the Sauder School of Business in fund raising initiatives and participates in the preparation of grant requests and administration of grants.
  2. Participates in professional and university wide initiatives.
  3. Participates in and supports the collaborative work of the UBC public service branches.
Terms of Appointment and Salary:

This position will be filled as a full time ongoing position with a five year administrative term as Head, David Lam Management Research Library and Canaccord Learning Commons (renewable). If eligible and qualified, the successful applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
