Supreme Court relief to NET candidates

In a relief to thousands of aspirants takingthe national eligibility test (NET), the UGC has withdrawn its decision to increase the cut-off marks for clearing the NET, following a Supreme Court order on Friday. The UGC had increased the eligibility score by 15% without notice.
The national educational testing bureau of the UGC conducts the NET for determining the eligibility for lectureship and for awarding junior research fellowship to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The NET is conducted in June and December every year.

The UGC, however, made several changes in the June 2012 exam, including increasing the cut-off marks. The candidates learnt about the changes only when the UGC announced it a day after announcing the results of the exam on September 18.

As per the initial notification, candidates belonging to the SC/ST sections needed 35, 35, and 60 marks respectively for qualifying papers 1, 2 and 3. The marks to be obtained by the OBCs were set as 35, 35, and 68 and for those belonging to the general category it was 40, 40, and 75. But, when the results were announced, candidates who would've been eligible as per the initial criteria failed to qualify.

As per the new criteria, the percentage of marks to be scored by candidates belonging to different categories has been increased by 15%.

This made several students file an affidavit with the SC against the UGC regarding change in norms. On Friday, the SC issued an order saying that the UGC's decision was invalid as it did not follow the exam policy in announcing the changes in cut-offs and that, too, in such a short period of time. An official at the University of Pune that conducts the NET exam said, "The SC decision is valid for all candidates who sat for the June 2012 examinations. The old cut-offs will be considered and new results will be announced."

WHY FILING PETITION AGAINST UGC IN COURTS ?

Recently,

I have seen several posts regarding filing petition against UGC in courts.
I think candidates are enthusiastic by Kerala high court verdict.
But, wait.
The game is not over yet..
UGC decision is yet to come. Its a statutory body.
Dear friends, what do you think about the situation,

if there is 1 Lakh NET qualified  candidate per session June & December?
.after that for 1 post 1000 candidate will apply.

All of you are demanding reduction of qualifying marks.

In objective mode without negative marking, its not a big deal to score 40+40+75 (UR) and less for Quota candidates.
If your luck favours, U may score easily.
I am just asking 1 question.
How many of you can challenge me that "I HAVE ANSWERED ALL THE QUESTIONS CONFIDENTLY. I WAS 100% SURE ABOUT THE OPTION I HAVE CHOSEN"

I can bet that if UGC re-examine the answer script with negative marking, the result count will come to 30%

Rare historical books deck up Rashtrapathi bhavan library

NEW DELHI: A peep into history is at the centre of Rashtrapati Bhavan's initiative to refurbish its library with rare books dating back to 1800 on 'Tipoo' Sultan and another signed by Lord George Curzon in 1904 to find a place on its racks. This is part of efforts by Pranab Mukherjee, who after taking over as President in July this year, has been devoting time reviving places of historical importance within the sprawling 340-room Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

The look of the library is being recreated to match the ambience in 1950 when it started functioning with tables in the room also being aligned the way it used to be. The books, which can be a real treat to any researcher, date between 1800 and 1947. They include a rare book of 1800 written by Alexander Beaston on "A View of the Origin and Conduct of the War with Tippoo Sultan". The book is a narrative of the operations of the British Army under the command of Lieutenant-General George Harris, and of the siege of Srirangapatnam--near Mysore--and the defacto capital of 'Tippoo' Sultan.

Mobile library celebrates 25 years

Ritesh Mishra, Hindustan Times
Indore, December 15, 2012

Shyam Agarwal's teenage hobby is paying dividends, having served book lovers of Indore for 25 years.
Agarwal's mobile library on wheels, Shyam Library and Suvidha Agency, delivers books, comics and also competitive examination magazines to thousands of readers across the city.

The venture that started with six novels and some magazines bought from a bus stand for R100 in 1987 today pays Agarwal "more than R1 lakh per month".
The library on wheels now has 5,000 members including the first 10 who helped shape a 15-year-old's dreams. Now 40, Agarwal, a commerce graduate, has moved on from a cycle to a scooter.
"I have hired four persons to distribute the books," he said. Agarwal got the idea for his unique library after seeing people approach his brother, a newspaper agent, for free delivery of books and magazines.
The library's monthly membership fee has gone up from the initial R25 to R350.
Business has thrived, but Agarwal believes it will be tough for others to emulate him.
"Today, everything is available on the internet."

Library at home for book lovers

Taking care of books can be a challenge especially if you have a large collection. Even though there are a substantial number of people who have taken to e-books, loyalists still prefer paperbacks for various reasons. Some say they love the smell of books, others say just sitting in a comfortable place and holding a book makes them feel like they’re actually learning something.
