Automation of libraries must: Prof Abdul Wahid

Inaugurates workshop on e-Granthalaya
Srinagar, July 7: Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdul Wahid Qureshi Saturday underscored the need for automation and modernization of libraries across Jammu and Kashmir.
“The libraries of all the Universities, Educational Institutions and those coming under the public domain in the State should switch over to the automation for the benefit of the people, particularly the students, researchers and candidates aspiring to participate in various competitive examinations,” said Prof Abdul Wahid while inaugurating the one-day workshop on Library Automation (e-Granthalaya).
The workshop was organized by the Department of Information Technology, Central University of Kashmir in collaboration with National Informatics Centre (NIC) (Government of India) J&K State Unit in the varsity campus.
Ram Kumar Matoria, Technical Director, Library and Information Services, NIC, New Delhi, Saleem Khan Technical, NIC, J&K State Unit, CUK Registrar, Dr Abdul Gani, Head of the Department, Department of Information Technology and Workshop Coordinator, Prof A M Wani, faculty of other departments and employees of the varsity were also present on the occasion.
Prof. Wahid described libraries as the cornerstone of the educational institutions, an abode of knowledge and storehouse of information.
Ram Kumar Matoria said that as many as 54000 public libraries were functioning across the country. “Out of these only 10 per cent are fully automated and the other 10 per cent are partially automated,” Kumar said.
He said that 2500 libraries across the country were using the e-Granthalaya software designed by the NIC. “The NIC is developing a new e-Granthalaya, which would be web based,” Kumar revealed. He said the Government should modernize the libraries and develop the infrastructure of libraries across the country.
Prof A M Wani stressed on the need for classification of books in the libraries across the state. “There is a dire need to link the libraries with the internet as the advent of mobile phones has totally changed the way people conduct research on various topics and search information,” Prof Wani said.

Utkal University's gen-next projects hang fire

BHUBANESWAR: Two of the much hyped projects of Utkal University - Wi-Fi facility for the students and library automation - have been on the cards for over a year now. They are, however, yet to see the light of the day, much to the disappointment of the students.
While some ground work was initiated for the Wi-Fi project last year, no concrete measures have been taken so far for library digitisation. The Parija Library of Utkal University is lying in a state of neglect.
Established in 1946, the library contains 2,37,695 books besides journals and 3,673 manuscripts. Of the total sanctioned 60 posts under different categories, only 29 staff look into the library affairs. Apart from staff shortage, the students have complained of lack of state-of-the-art facilities in the library.
Sources said the much-awaited automation project was to be implemented through a software ‘Libsys’, costing around ` 8 lakh. It was aimed at ensuring networking of various libraries across the country with Utkal University helping users gain access to a large number of books.
Sources said the required funds have not been sanctioned which is delaying the automation project, a decision that was taken earlier last year. While there is hardly any new addition to the list of books in the library, the existing ones are lying uncared for.
A student of PG Department in PM and IR, Ranjan Kumar Sahoo, alleged that the authorities in charge of the library are negligent towards its upkeep. “Almost all the books are outdated and of no use for the students. When no effort is being taken to get the latest publications, one cannot expect the ambitious project of e-library to be implemented any time soon,” he said.
Library automation project apart, varsity authorities had announced that they would make the entire campus Wi-Fi enabled by March-end. Much behind the deadline, this project too is moving at a snail’s pace despite the fact that the university has the infrastructure and funds. The project work will be carried out in two phases covering all the departments, hostels and guest house.
Chairman of PG Council and project in-charge PK Sarkar said first phase work is on.
“Work on making the departments Wi-Fi enabled is being carried out after which, hostels and the guest house areas will be taken up. After that the BSNL officials will provide the connection,” he said.
Sarkar was, however, non-committal about the timeline for execution of the project that would cost around Rs1.5 crore.

Libsys very soon in Allahabad University's Central Library

ALLAHABAD: Are you tired of searching your favourite book from more than six lakh books located at the Central Library of Allahabad, theAllahabad University comes up with a solution. Just click the mouse button and locate the book you want. The authorities of the Central library of AU would soon be procuring the hi-tech version of the software called Libsys which will not only help locate the book for the user but also keep the detailed information pertaining to the record of the book concerned.

With the latest version of this software working at the library, any user has to just come to the reference section of the library and the computer would tell the user where to locate the particular book, be it the stack of the central library, libraries located at different departments, reading section etc. Not only this, the software will also serve as the bibliography of the book concerned keeping all the records associated with the given book.

"We are already working on the software but in the coming days, we would be getting the latest version of the software after which we can not only locate the book but can also tell if the book is issued to someone or for that matter how many times the book has been issued etc as we can install the system called RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) technology which helps in keeping records of lending, borrowing and shelving status of items such as books, along with the locating the book would be much easier", said librarian, Dr A P Gakhar. Moreover, the library authorities are feeding the data regarding the books purchased after 2002 and the same is being fed in the computer which would later on be telling the exact location of the desired book, he added. The best help that RFID would be providing us is that any book can be easily located along with the issuing history of the book as we can keep the exact record of the book, he added.

The authorities of Central Library has also initiated the process for procuring a 'Blade Sever' after which the latest and more hi-tech version of Libsys will get functional in the library. Sources say that the main problem being faced by the library authority is of cataloguing the books that were purchased before 2002 as the books that were purchased after 2002 have been properly catalogued and can be easily located. Thus, the authorities would soon start cataloguing the books procured before 2002 by outsourcing the same.

"We have asked the departments also to prepare the data of the books kept in the departmental library which would in turn be fed along with that being prepared at the central library", said thedeputy librarian B K Singh

Once the data would be accumulated, any user can find the location of the book with just a click of the mouse, despite the fact that the specific book is kept at the central library or at departments. "We have mentioned a particular call number to every book which is identification of the specific piece and as such easy to locate it", said Singh.

Remarkably, the data fed in the main server would also be attached to the internet, after which any user, sitting in any of the distant library of the country, can find the book on internet. "But this does not mean that the distant users can get the access to the books", said Singh.

"This is just the beginning of our plan to make the central library fully digitise after which the age old functioning of the library will witness a phenomenal change all set to give a new meaning for the users", said Dr AP Gakhar, librarian of varsity central library.

With the latest version of this software working at the library, any user has to just come to the reference section of the library and the computer would tell the user where to locate the particular book, be it the stack of the central library, libraries located at different departments, reading section etc.
