Delhi university tops, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda 17th in yearly downloads

With over ten lakh downloads, the University of Delhi has topped the chart in usage of Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) facility while M S University is among top 20 universities of the country.

INFLIBNET Centre is an autonomous Inter-University Centre (IUC) of the University Grants Commission that works collaboratively with university libraries to shape the future of the academic libraries in the evolving information environment.

The download statistics of universities reflect that during 2011, University of Delhi topped the chart with 10,44,443 yearly total downloads (YTD). Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Hyderabad followed Delhi university with 7,68,526 and 7,67,181 YTD.

The statistics reveals that MSU is the only university from Gujarat to be in the top 20 list with 1,82,299 YTD. "In terms of year wise full text download too, there is a healthy trend at our university," MSU librarian Dr Mayank Trivedi told TOI on Monday, adding that if the year 2009 witnessed 1,15,128 full text download, the year 2010 saw 1,38,011 full text download.

"In the year 2011, the full text download increased to 2,13,617," said Trivedi, ahead of the three days National Convention on Knowledge, Library and Information Networking (NACLIN) which will kick off at MSU on Tuesday.

MSU in collaboration with New Delhi-based Developing Library Network (DELNET) is organizing NACLIN 2012 on the theme of 'Libraries for the Future: Collection, competencies and cooperation'.

The Centre wishes to recruit SOUL Coordinators on each in the following regions to take up the challenging assignments of library automation through SOUL 2.0 software developed by INFLIBNET Centre. The incumbent is required to work at assigned regions. Initial period of appointment will be one year only which is extendable for the further period which carries consolidated/fixed remuneration. The eligibility conditions may be relaxed in exceptional cases at the discretion of the competent authority. The post may be offered depending upon suitability of candidate.

Nature of Work

Promotional activities of SOUL software, canvassing for premium membership  and provide after sale support i.e. coordination for installation of software, attending queries, onsite visits, trainings, demonstration and any other work assigned by the Centre.  

Eligibility Criteria for SOUL Coordinators

Applicant should fulfill the following eligibility criteria to apply for the post SOUL regional coordinator

1. Who should apply? 

Working Librarian/Dy. Librarian/ Asst. Librarian in the University/College/academic institutions should apply along with no objection certificate from the employer. Also existing coordinators and retired library professionals can also apply again.

2. Educational Qualification

Applicant should have minimum Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc) with IT exposure and literacy in Computer. 

3. Experience

Working professional with 5 years experience in Library Automation

4.   Period of Contract

One year from the date of appointment as SOUL Coordinator

5. Remuneration

Rs. 9,000/- per month as honorarium and Rs. 1,000/- per month towards the incidental expenses  (The  remuneration  for SOUL Coordinator  and Technical  Assistants  are likely to be revised shortly)

6. Other Terms and Conditions

• The Coordinator will be authorized to appoint two qualified graduate each from Library Science and Computer Science on consolidated salary of Rs. 9,000/- per month respectively as Technical Assistant for period of 1 year.
• Travel expenses towards promoting,  installation,  training and maintenance  of SOUL software in their assigned geographical area will be borne by Centre.
• TA/DA rules will be applicable as per rates of the INFLIBNET Centre’s rule.
• The Centre will pay a sum of Rs. 25,000/- as imprest money for meeting the TA of  staff  and  other  office  expenses  which  will  be  reimbursed  to  the  SOUL Coordinator by the Centre on production of bills/vouchers monthly.
• SOUL Coordinator as well as technical assistants will be given free training at INFLIBNET Centre. TA and local hospitality will be borne by the Centre. 
• Regular  progress  reports  should  be  submitted  to  review  the  performance  of assigned work monthly.
• The SOUL Coordinator should promote minimum 50 installations per year in their given region.
• No TA/DA will be provided for attending the interview at INFLIBNET centre, Ahmedabad.

M S University mulls library's lifetime membership to alumni

VADODARA: M S University (MSU) is likely to open doors of university's library for its alumni. A proposal to offer lifetime membership of the library by collecting one-time service charge will come up for discussion during Monday's syndicate meeting. During the meeting, the syndicate members will take decision on two proposals of collaborating with US-based Stone Age Institute and an Amman-based educational agency.

The Indiana-based Stone Age Institute at Gosport, US has sent a proposal for collaboration with MSU's Department of Archaeology and Ancient History to jointly work on 'Narmada Basin Paleoanthropology Project (NBPA)' which targets to collect all the paleoanthropological evidence within the last two million years at Narmada Basin.

The International Center for University Services (ICUS), Jordan, on the other hand, has submitted a proposal which intends to increase presence of internal (foreign) students at MSU campus where the number of foreign students is on a steady decline.

This apart the syndicate members will also decide the fate of two suspended employees of the university - Chandrakant Gurjar of the construction division and Sudhir Deshpande of the All India and Central Services Training Centre.

To bring in uniformity in rules of grading, marksheets and examination across faculties in view of the introduction of choice-based credit system, a proposal to change ordinances related to examination and results has also been placed before the syndicate members.

The members will also discuss the issue of awarding chancellor's gold medal at the next convocation of the university, agenda of the building committee and revision of the travel allowance rules of Gujarat government and its application to university employees.

Narendra Modi inaugurates e-library for lawyers

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated an e-library for lawyers which will make accessible various judgements of High Courts and the Supreme Court.

Inaugurating the e-library at a function organised by Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG) and the state government, Modi said the e-library was a major weapon to attain qualitative change in grievance redressal system and a powerful force of democracy.

Chairman of BCG Dilip Patel said the e-library inaugurated today was the first of its kind in the country which has made more than 7 lakh judgements from Supreme Court and various High Courts accessible through specially designed software.

The state government had provided Rs 2.22 crore for the logistics needed for the project, which includes PCs, printers, power back-ups installed in all offices of taluka level bar associations to access judgements and various law books, he said.

Schools with no playground and library will not be approved: Congress

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Congress leaders, announcing their policy on sports in Gujarat. The leaders announced that if the Congress was voted to power, no school will be granted sanction without playgrounds and library.

At present, the Chief Minister of Gujarat is cheating youth of Gujarat under the guise of his stunts labeled with Khel Mahakumbh under the ridiculous slogan "Play Gujarat, Win Gujarat".

GPCC president Arjun Modhwadia said that out of total 80 sportspersons from India participated in London Olympics, 20 were from Haryana State and out of total 6 medals begged by India, 4 were to the Haryana's sportspersons.

Following the Haryana Pattern, centers will be established at particular cities for different sports and world-level sportsmen will be trained through comprehensive training. No sanction will be given to new schools without playground and library.

Sports complexes will be established at Taluka-level for indoor and outdoor games. "Gujarat Olympic Academy" will be established for motivating the youth of Gujarat for participating and competing in national and international sports events. Coaches from abroad and from within the country in addition to the infrastructure facilities would be made

available.
