DU college librarian killed in Meerut
DU college librarian killed in Meerut
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Meerut: Anangpal Singh, 57, a library and information assistant at Sri Aurobindo College in Delhi, was first hacked and then shot to death by close to half a dozen assailants while he was on his way to Delhi. Singh used to commute from Meerut to Delhi daily for work, parking his motorcycle near the Meerut Cantt railway station from where he would hop onto a train.
Singh, who had been working at the college for the past 36 years, was killed brutally on Monday morning even as onlookers watched in horror.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of men in a car pulled over near Singh at Jituali trisection under Kankerkhera police station. After cornering him, they attacked him with sharp weapons and then opened fire at him. The victim died on the spot.
Police are looking at allegations made by the the librarian’s family that the attack was a fallout of his son’s love marriage, which was strongly opposed by the girl’s parents.
Anangpal’s son Dinesh Singh, who works with CAG and is currently posted in Guwahati, had married Madhu three years ago.
“The assailants tried to make it look like a road accident by injuring the victim with sharp weapons after shooting him. However, the postmortem report has confirmed that the 57-year-old died due to a bullet injury. We have started our investigation and are collecting footage from CCTV cameras installed near the scene of crime to gather clues. Multiple teams have been constituted to crack the case,” Meerut SP (city) Maan Singh Chauhan told TOI on Tuesday.
In his police complaint, the victim’s brother, Ajay Singh, alleged that following threats from Madhu’s family, they had left their native village, Wajidpur, and got settled in Pallavpuram.
An FIR under IPC Section 302 (murder) against unidentified persons was lodged at the Kankerkhera police station. Officials said that though no arrests have been made so far, police teams have been raiding different locations to nab the accused.
