USP is one of two regional universities in the world and is the leading tertiary education provider and research facility in the South Pacific. The School of Language, Arts and Media (SLAM) at the University of the South Pacific offers courses in Literature, Linguistics, Creative Writing, Academic English, Journalism, French, Chinese, Fijian and Hindi. It has a number of high profile scholars and writers on its list of academic staff, including significant authorities in the following areas: Diaspora and Postcolonial Studies, Fijian and Pacific Studies, Applied Linguistics, Endangered Pacific Languages, Poststructuralist Philosophy and the works of Flann O"Brien and James Joyce. The Confucius Institute, The Pacific Writing Forum, Radio Pasifik, Pacific Languages Unit and The Learning Services Center are housed within the School.
