Library of Best Books at Pune

Eunice de Souza - has introduced many to the delights of the English languagE. She writes on books, reading and writing

Readable notes on the extracts of literary works from the volumes that were once forgotten

The Forced Marriage has been described as one of the best of all one-act plays while Adventures Among Birds speaks about loneliness of animals
Last week, some of my cousins who live in the family house in Pune rang me to say they had been cleaning out the loft and had come across books belonging to my father. I had lost track of them years ago. Among the ones I remember best are several volumes of The World’s Library of Best Books, given to my father by his (in Christian terms), godfather.

They were a treasure house during my school years, and looking through them again, I still find them a delight. There are extracts from fiction, plays, poems, non-fiction, in English, French, German, Greek, Spanish and others.

There are lively notes on the extracts, photographs of performances, and of relevant paintings from various galleries. Here, for instance is the introduction to Moliere’s The Forced Marriage, described as “one of the best of all one-act plays.”

It was written in 1664 as court entertainment, and the king himself, Louis XIV, who was then 26 took part in it. “The caricatures of the two philosophers were very daring; for the University of Paris was trying to promote an Act by which all attacks on the philosophy of Aristotle should be crimes deserving death.”

Cervantes, author of Don Quixote was born in 1547 and died in 1616, ten days before Shakespeare... “He was a gentle, genial humourist, somewhat on the lines of Dickens, but with more subtlety and refinement…” Of Boswell, author of a biography of Samuel Johnson, “The only reasonable explanation of his extraordinary triumph as a biographer is that he was enjoyable because he enjoyed, and interesting because he was interested.

His self-indulgence, his vanity, his often foolish candour, and his lust for notoriety do not count much against his alertness of observation, his boundless good humour, and his enviable self-satisfaction.” The extracts don’t seem to follow any discernible order: Virgil appears in the same volume as John Galsworthy, Henry Fielding, an anonymous ballad, Longfellow’s poems, Shakespeare, Horace. Here is a quotation from Horace’s ode, The Golden Mean.

“Licinius, trust a seaman’s lore: /Steer not too boldly to the deep,/Nor, fearing storms, by treacherous shores/Too closely keep./Who makes the golden mean his guide,/ Shuns miser’s cabin, foul and dark, /Shuns gilded roofs, where pomp and pride/ Are envy’s mark.”

Another old favourite, to be recited with conviction, W E Henley’s Invictus. “Out of the night that covers me/Black as the pit from pole to pole,/I thank whatever gods may be/For my unconquerable soul./…It matters not how strait the gate,/How charged with punishments the scroll,/I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

And, irresistibly, the great natural history writer, W H Hudson, one of whose books on the Argentinian pampas, Far Away and Long Ago was a school text in our final year. About the extract from his book Adventures Among Birds, the editor writes, “So intolerable is loneliness to some animals, Mr Hudson says, that they will attach themselves to any creature they can scrape acquaintance with, and he instances the case of a pony confined by itself in a field, and a solitary partridge, the only one of its species in that place; they were always to be seen together in close companionship.”

Then, from the book itself, the story of a lonely swan, driven away by his parents, who eventually made friends with a trout. “The fish had its place by the side of the bird, just below the surface, and together they would rest and together move like one being…Those who first saw it could hardly credit the evidence of their own senses.”

The volumes were edited by Wilfred Whitten (1864-1942), a British writer and editor whose pseudonym was John O’London, and published by The Standard Literature Co., Ltd Calcutta by arrangement with George Newnes, Limited, London. I couldn’t find a date of publication, however, or the price. But the volumes still appear to be available from online book dealers.

Librarian, top official dupe BJMC(Pune) of Rs 4 cr

Vigilance branch of the Dept of Medical Education and Research unearths misappropriation in the purchase of books and medical journals since 1999

By -Tanaji Khot
A major scam in the purchase of books and medical journals at the prestigious B J Medical College’s (BJMC’s) central library has been exposed following a recent inspection by the vigilance branch of the Department of Medical Education and Research which has uncovered misappropriation of over Rs 4 crore.

The vigilance branch investigation has revealed that the library administration flouted every norm set by the Good Office Committee (GOC), New Delhi while making these purchases.
The purchase of books and journals was not done as per the norms set by the GOC

The inspection report came to the conclusion that the purchase of the medical journals was not done in accordance with the rules but on the basis of a “mutual understanding” arrived between librarian R K Jadhav and CEO T M Lakade, the publisher and the supplier.

The audit report has also indicted the supplier, Doctors Library (India), for cheating the government and the educational loss caused to the student of the medical college and recommended legal action against them.

According to GOC norms, a supplier has to furnish the order given to any international publisher and also proof of money transfer to the latter like bank remittance, customer ID and subscription number.

In BJMC’s case, Doctors Library has not furnished this proofs since 1999. The audit report recommends blacklisting of Doctors Library (India) and recovery of Rs 34, 71,562, which was supposed to be paid to Globe Publication immediately.

If they fail to reimburse the same, according to the auditors. the entire amount of over Rs 4 crore should be recovered from Doctors Library.

The report also holds librarian R K Jadhav responsible for failing to recover all documents from the supplier on time. His act suggests deliberate negligence, the report claims, as he did not verify whether all journals were delivered on the stipulated time or not and the cost of the journals was accurate.

Even though the supplier's was not up to the standard, Jadhav mentioned It as satisfactory and repeatedly recommended the renewal of his annual contract.  This established that Jadhav protected the supplier's interest resulting in a huge loss to the government.

T M Lakade, BJMC's chief administrative officer, was also held guilty for the releasing the payments of these purchases and violating several financial guidelines. He too is reported to have secured the supplier's interest and duped the state.

The report has expressed fears that an attempt to destroy the records or them going missing cannot be ruled out as Lakde was at the helm in 1999 when this misappropriation and corruption took place.

Aid to 34 Pune public libraries withdrawn

PUNE: Two government-aided public libraries in the city and 32 in the district have been declared ineligible for aid in a recent inspection carried out by the district administration.
The libraries, categorised as 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D' by the state, were found flouting government norms regarding daily operation, maintenance of accounts, membership, number and quality of books and staff.
The inspection drive covered 591 public libraries in the district.
The libraries are given annual grants to the tune of Rs 20,000 to Rs 4 lakh for their development as per their grades. Besides, they are also given building funds of up to Rs 75,000 for any repairs that need to be carried out.
The state government recently passed an order that an inspection of all public libraries in the state be conducted since the government was planning to increase grants to aided libraries by 50%.
"It was found during the drive that some libraries were opened only for funds, while some libraries had facilities only on paper. There were some libraries that were registered but did not exist, while some of them had closed down," said deputy collector Ravindra Kulkarni. The report of this inspection will be sent to the state government and further action will be taken, he added.
Meanwhile, he said, "In the city, a total of 55 public libraries were inspected and it was found that 53 libraries were functioning well. Two libraries - Santoshi Granthalaya in Karvenagar and Adarsh Vachanalay in Ghorpadi - have been found ineligible to receive the grant."
During the inspection, one library in Khed taluka was demoted to a lower category. Kulkarni said that among the libraries that were found ineligible are 11 libraries in Haveli taluka (the highest in the district), three each in Shirur, Velhe, Junnar and Indapur and four in Daund.

Bharat Natya Mandir library to digitise rare books, create audio library of musicals

Bharat Natya Mandir, one of the oldest institutes in the city, is planning to digitise rare books and manuscripts that have been preserved in its library for decades, besides creating an audio library of musicals currently in the form of cassettes. The library boasts housing around 10,000 books. Some of them are almost a century old and do not have a second copy in the market. For instance, Vishiptrao by Waman Govind Kale is 108 years old and another rare work at the library Panipatcha Dudaivi Mohra is a historical play written in 1898.
The institute also possesses old photographs and recordings of old musical plays.
Of the 10,000 books, 5,000 are on Marathi drama, and 2,500 on one-act plays. About 1,500 are reference books and over 500 are on English and Hindi drama.
“Of the 5,000 books on Marathi drama, we will only be digitising those that are very old and are not available in the market,” said Rajeev Paranjape, a member of Bharat Natya Mandir, who has been associated with the institute for three decades now. For maintaining records, and classify all the books in the library in a systematic manner, the management has already begun the work of bar-coding books.
Books on Marathi drama at the library include Swayamvar, Maan-Apmaan, Sharda, and Sanshay-Kallol to name a few. “A number of students, researching on Marathi drama, regularly visit our library. We have books by renowned Marathi dramatists like Krushnaji Prabhakar, Annasaheb Kirloskar, Shripad Krushna Kolhatkar, Veer Vamanrao Joshi and so on,” said Mohan Mule, the librarian.
The institute has already started work on audio and video library that will include works by Jaimala Sheledar, Chhota Gandharva, Shanta Modak to name a few. “All the plays that will be included in the audio library are the ones that were performed here after 1960s,” added Paranjape. Founded in 1894, the Bharat Natya Mandir library also houses a few diaries written by several play enthusiasts, associated with the institute around 80 years back.

Pune's library by kids, for kids (Daily Bhaskar)

Pune: In the neighbourhood of the teenage suspects who had kidnapped and brutally murdered Shubham Shirke in Dighi on March 31, resides seven-year-old Mahi Milind Shinde who every parent and citizens should be proud of.
This shining star of Alandi Road has started the Sparkle Club Library with 16 children from the area. Realising the dearth of a library in the vicinity, she launched the club on April 1 after planning for two months with her brother Gautam (11). Later, Ananya (7), her cousin, also joined them.
The club members comprising a four-year-old, the youngest member, and the eldest being 10 years old meet at the balcony of Mahi’s house at Ram Housing Society from 4 pm to 8 pm every day. They spend four hours reading books like the biography of Mother Teresa, children encyclopaedia and fairy tales.  Mahi teaches them skits and storytelling, while Gautam hones their stage puppet show skills.
To become a club member, one has to fill a form giving details like name, address, age, phone number along with parents’ consent. The membership fee is Rs 50 per month.
Her supportive parents — father Milind, a manager with Kalyani Car Painting Special Steel at Mundhwa and mother Gautami, an interior designer — have lent her around 200 books for the library.
“I was craving to start a club for the past two months. One day, I woke up at 1 am and walked into my parents’ bedroom weeping. My parents suggested that I can use the balcony of our house for the purpose. Then I talked to the children in the neighbourhood. Eight-year-old Shruti Pitalelu became the first member and once we started having fun, other children too wanted to join,” Mahi said.
Gautami said, “Mahi has leadership qualities. That is why her club could get so many members in 10 days. We never thought that she would be able to do it so well.”
Adam Konoth (7) who became a member after coming to know about the club while visiting his grandmother, said, “My grandma used to tell me stories. Now I tell her stories.”
