Libraries Should Be What Users Want—With a Little Help from Librarians

The future is vibrant—and it is working—in Colorado, where LJ held its 12th Design Institute (DI), visited area libraries that reflect and respond to their communities, and heard from both librarians and architects about new library spaces for collaboration and creation. It’s engaged in upstate New York, at Fayetteville Free Library (FFL). There, Director Sue Considine and transliteracy development director Lauren Britton have launched a Fab Lab for creation of physical products—and those can be as high-tech as what comes out of a 3-D MakerBot or as low-tech as the product and designs of a crochet group, which can be made into a book to inspire others. (For more on maker spaces, listen to the OCLC/LJ webinar, Made in a Library.)As many of us here at LJ gear up to attend the American Library Association conference in Anaheim, it seems an appropriate time to reflect on the future of libraries. To quote political muckraker Lincoln Steffens, “I have seen the future, and it works.” Unfortunately, Steffens was referring to the post–World War I Soviet Union, and we all know how that turned out. I feel a bit more confident, however, about the future I see.

It’s all-encompassing at Skokie Public Library in Illinois, which has a digital media lab for adults, not just teens or college students. It’s confirmed in LJ’s Patron Profiles (going online soon, in print p. 50–51), which reports that power e-users “aren’t choosing the web over coming to the library in person…they are choosing to do both.”
The message is the same all over: libraries are not just warehouses for books but places of creation and community. They’re not just information sources but maker spaces and social spaces. They’re places that “make us want to linger,” as MS&R architect Traci Lesneski put it at the DI at Denver Public Library last month. When Dan Meehan, HBM Architects, asked the roomful of librarians how many thought their libraries would have 25, 50, or 75 percent fewer print books in ten years, most hands shot up at 50 percent.
Librarians have already started planning for that change. Like Considine, they’ve begun repurposing their collection development dollars. “Lauren [Britton] came knocking at my door—she was a circulation clerk—with her idea [for a maker space] at a time we were looking at our budget,” says Considine, “examining what we do, what we should not do…. We want to help the community create content, not merely consume it…to provide access [to tools to achieve] their hopes, dreams, aspirations…. Librarians do that every day already.”
The particulars may vary, but the thinking is the same. Find out what your users want and “what they don’t even know they need,” said Louise Schaper at the DI, channeling Steve Jobs. (Schaper is project lead on LJ’s New Landmark Libraries; the latest round of winners, academic buildings, will be revealed in July.)
Despite all the talk of downsizing collections, libraries aren’t abandoning the book brand, or the collection. Joseph Sanchez (instructional designer at Auraria Library at the University of Colorado, Denver; a panelist at both the DI and the OCLC/LJ webinar; and a 2011 LJ Mover & Shaker) has helped lead development of the ebook purchase (not license) model at Douglas County Libraries, CO (see “Momentum Builds for DCL’s Ebook Model,”). His vision goes much further, with a collection development policy that would add the audio, video, ­ebooks, and “physibles” (digital objects that can become physical) that the library user creates to the library’s holdings. It dovetails with Britton’s idea at FFL. “In a read/write culture,” she says, “[library users] write their own book and make two copies: one to take home, one to be cataloged.”
In Sanchez’s plan, library users/creators donate one copy to the library of origin to be cataloged and circulated. They can sell the digital file or product to other libraries at fair market value. “Here’s thousands of libraries willing to distribute your creation if you agree to sell, not license it,” says Sanchez.
With minds like these in the library field, it’s no wonder the future looks like it really does work.

Yahoo’s Axis Browser


Yahoo  introduced a new browser plugin for desktop computers as well as an iOS browser called Axis. Yahoo’s browser is not meant to be a replacement for Chrome, Firefox or Internet explorer on desktop computers. Instead, Axis is what Yahoo calls a “search browser”, which is basically a plugin to visually display search results served by the search engine.
Yahoo Axis is available for desktop computers as a free plug-in for versions of Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and the Chrome Web browsers. On mobile devices, Axis is available as a stand-aloneiPhone and iPad app, while an Android version should come later, Yahoo said.

Goa University library now just a click away


PANAJI: The Goa University on Wednesday launched the website and Online Open Access Catalogue (OPAC) for its library, which will enable students and the public at large to look up titles of their interest from the over 1.40 lakh books and 400 journals at the click of a mouse. Users can now reserve and renew books using OPAC. Another 250 e-books are also available on the website and users will be able to download the ones of their interest onto their personal computer for future reference.
The website also enables university faculty to recommend books to readers on the website, which was inaugurated by chief minister, Manohar Parrikar, on Wednesday. Users can access all doctoral thesis submitted to prominent varsities in the country. Goa University will upload PhD thesis submitted to it on the website soon too.
"The website http:library.unigoa.ac.in uses an open source software KOHA. Users can login, search for titles using keywords and also find related titles in the search. Books can also be previewed by the readers. If users want to generally browse through the books available in thelibrary they can do it using the OPAC http:libcat.unigoa.ac.in on the website. The OPAC will soon be made available on mobile devices too," said university librarian Dr Gopakumar V, who has designed the website.
"Colleges affiliated to the Goa University are encouraged to create their own library websites. We plan to link these websites to ours so that a user can at a time search a book's availability in the libraries across Goa's institutions," Dr Gopakumar said.
The GU library's books cover a wide range of disciplines such as the humanities, social science and pure and applied sciences like microbiology, marine science, environmental science, computer science, geology and management. The library has a special collection on Latin America. It also has a large collection of titles in Konkani and the foreign language section includes titles in Portuguese, French and Spanish.
Users can either access these e-books from the comfort of their homes or through the 35 computers in the Goa University's Cyber Centre. The university campus has Wi-Fi connectivity which will enable students to access the website anywhere in the university campus on their laptops, if they do not want to be restricted within the computer laboratory of the university library to use the e-books.
The website is linked to full text databases like that of the American Chemical Society, Oxford University Press, Royal Society of Chemistry among others. One can also use the website to go to open access databases such as DOAJ, African Journals Online and Free Medical Journals.
Different language dictionaries, encyclopedias and formats for academic writing too are available on the website.

Lack of funds delaying library complex project: J-K Minister

Srinagar, May 26 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir Government has said paucity of funds has delayed completion of the State of Art Library complex in the city even as it assured that the project will be completed very soon. "The construction work on the (State of Art Library) complex was started during 2003 at an estimated cost of Rs 17.34 crore, but due to paucity of funds it could not be completed within the time frame," Minister for Tourism and Culture Nawang Rigzin Jora said. Jora, who visited the upcoming Library complex at Moulana Azad road yesterday, said the Library Department would soon have its State of Art Library complex with modern facilities. Taking stock of the pace of the Library Complex work, the Minister directed the executing agency to re-double efforts to expedite work on the project for its time-bound completion. Jora said the Government has released over Rs 10 crore during last few years for its speedy completion, against which so far Rs seven crore have been incurred on the project. "The formulation of revised plan become necessary due to cost escalation," he said directing the executing agency to submit revised plan for approval of funds well in time. The Minister said after completion of the complex, the State of Art Library will have 60 cabins and a children centre with audio visual facilities would be linked with internet facility. He said the complex have also a space for three lakhs books and 8,000 manuscripts, besides play auditorium and Art gallery.

Bhopal's Central Library now a protected monument


BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh government has declared the famous Central Library in the city as a protected monument
State culture minister Laxmikant Sharma said that sanction has been granted to issue the final notification to this effect. This notification is issued under Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1964. 
This red stone structure is one of the oldest and beautiful buildings in the city. It was built in 1908 by the then Nawab of Bhopal state Begum Sultan Jahan for housing Kind Edward Museum. Her objective behind the establishment of the museum was to display the gifts and offerings presented to the rulers of the state. 
The museum was inaugurated in 1909 by the then Viceroy of India Lord Minto. It was closed down during the Nawab era itself on account of lack of maintenance. Then in 1955, Maulana Azad Central Library was housed in this building. At that time, the library had about 60,000 books and manuscripts in Hindi, English, Urdu, Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit. This building situated on Itwara Road is known as Edward Museum, Malauna Azad Central Library, Kendriya Pustakalaya and Ajaib Ghar also. 
No digging or construction work can be carried out on the land and buildings situated within 200 meter radius of it without permission of the commissioner, Archaeology and Archives.

Proposed library at People’s Park books new row

Greens resent MCC’s move to allow development
After people’s protest against revision in water cess, another stir is showing all signs of gaining momentum here.

This time it’s for green cause, with environmentalists taking up the cudgel against the libraries department. The department has plans to build a library at People’s Park opposite KSRTSC sub-urban bus stand in the city.

In a joint protest on Sunday, members of Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), Mysore Youth Forum and Parisara Samrakshana Samithi planted 10 saplings in a place away from the prohibited zone in the park. Though the issue is not new with MCC and environmentalists locked over the issue from the past 15 years, it’s a row in the making in the recent days.

The agitators alleged that Library Authority set up barriers overnight, around the proposed site and erected a signboard prohibiting trespassers. The high court has ordered to maintain status quo.

Further strange is that the Mayor sending a letter to the Police Commissioner on Saturday evening, requesting severe action against the protesters. The mayor was fretted about environmentalists planting saplings in the protected area. MCC does not take any action against violators of building bylaws or those who encroach public property, but it is quick to take against law abiders, the protesters alleged.

They further alleged that, MCC has failed to initiate against various encroachers of People's Park, while the city corporation itself is on the wrong side for dumping pavement debris in the park. It appears that MCC has a master plan to destroy People's Park, so that this valuable real estate can be sold for commercial activities, starting from the library.

People should urge their representatives to take back the land given to the library by MCC, remove all encroachments, take back the land given for tennis courts (we have learnt that the present lease of the courts has expired), and maintain this very precious lung space of Mysore.

The tree guards were provided by Raghulal and Co. Senior citizens of Mysore H R Bapu Satyanarayana, Dr K A Kushalapa, Dr B N Jayaram, B R Pai, Andal Siddharthacharry, Prof M. Umapathy and CAVA artists, Shoaib and his colleagues took part in the protest.

Rs 1000cr Library Mission in India


New Delhi, May 27: The government has launched an ambitious Rs 1,000-crore plan to digitally link 9,000 libraries across India.
The culture ministry has set up a National Mission on Libraries, headed by former Delhi University vice-chancellor Deepak Pental.
During the centenary celebration of the Oxford University Press, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said: “A young reader sitting in his village public library should be able to access books and information from across the world.”
This was one of the key recommendations of the Sam Pitroda-led National Knowledge Commission. The cabinet secretariat pushed for the proposal on March 20 this year.
Also planned is a survey of reading habits of Indians and to revive community libraries and reading rooms.
The 10-member panel includes former Infosys chief N.R. Narayana Murthy’s wife Sudha and H.K. Kaul, secretary of the department of higher education, ministry of human resource development.
The Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation will be the nodal agency for the mission. It will double as a secretariat for the mission and also help fund book acquisitions.
The mission will also be responsible for drafting a “national policy on library and information systems for India”.
“There has to be quality benchmarks for services to be adhered to by all libraries. Currently, there is no blueprint that you can follow,” said a senior official.

पुस्तकालय के शुभारंभ के उपरांत ग्रामीणों को संबोधित करते हुए सीडीओ सुरेंद्र सिंह ने कहा कि नाबार्ड के सहयोग से चलायी जा रही कृषि ग्रामीण ऋ ण योजना के अंतर्गत ग्रामों में स्थापित होने वाले ग्रामीण पुस्तकालय से ग्रामीणवासी लाभांवित होंगे। इस योजना का मुख्य उद्देश्य ग्रामीणों को ज्ञानवर्धक पुस्तकों के माध्यम से उनका बौद्धिक विकास कराना है। उन्होंने कहा कि ग्रामीण पुस्तकालय का सदस्य बनने के लिए मात्र 20 रुपये सदस्यता शुल्क जमा करना होगा। दुर्घटना होने पर सम्बन्धित सदस्य को एक लाख रुपये की सहायता राशि दी जाएगी। उन्होंने पुस्तकालय का संचालन करने वाली समिति के सदस्यों को व्यवस्थित ढंग से कार्य करने का सुझाव दिया। कार्यक्रम का संचालन ज्योति सक्सेना कर रही थी।

The quest for the optimal mobile device that can advance education by improving access to learning materials and reducing costs is engaging many countries, including India. Among the more promising gadgets for the task are e-readers, which use e-ink display technology that closely matches the look and feel of a printed black and white page. Tablet computers, on the other hand, offer a full-colour, backlit screen alternative suitable for multimedia and rich content. These technologies can significantly aid the teaching-learning process. And this concept has been put to the test in a field setting in Ghana involving distribution of e-readers to hundreds of school students. One striking outcome: 43 per cent of the students, who had never used a computer, learned to use the gadget quickly. Students who had access to only a few books at home were able to read an average of 107 titles overnight. These ranged from wirelessly delivered sponsored texts to open access volumes that they downloaded. Also, several students discovered that they could listen to music, and read newspapers using the data connection. Importantly, though, 40 per cent of the gadgets broke while in use mainly because of fragile screens. These results from the project make it clear that there are key problems to be ironed out.
India's grand plan to identify a tablet device for educational purposes has been virtually stillborn. The Centre has conceded that the Aakash tablet computer distributed in limited numbers does not measure up due to problems such as heating of the device, limited battery life and unsuitable screen technology. The Department of Information Technology, which has been working with the IIT system, must show the competence necessary to come up with a robust set of specifications for the ideal “low cost access-cum-computing” device for students. The key factor that should underscore the programme is a falling price curve for the hardware. Amazon's Kindle, an e-reader, has witnessed a price fall from $399 in 2007, to $79 now. If a similar graph can be ensured in India, there can be a free or subsidised reading-learning device in every schoolbag. Moreover, the gadget must be able to exploit the ubiquitous availability of mobile data connectivity. Crucially, learning materials need to be available free of copyright costs. Literature could be sourced, for instance, using Creative Commons permission for use by students. It would be a great leap forward if a robust, affordable device can be produced through multiple vendors on an open licensing platform, with the Centre specifying the benchmarks, and monitoring compliance through a certification mechanism.

Manipur MLA moots implementation of Public Library Act


Imphal, May 24 2012: With a view to create awareness on the importance of Public Library and also to mend the shortage in connection with public library, the Manipur Public Library Act will be brought up in the floor of the House during its Monsoon session, K Shyam, MLA, Langthabal A/C has assured.
MLA K Shyam was speaking as Guest of Honour of the Silver Jubilee celebration of Manipur Library Association (MALA) at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound here today.
The MLA observed that library plays an important role in the development of a society.
So, we need to bring about development in the Library system of the state.
For this, it is high time for MALA to take the initiative towards spearheading a public movement in the state.
The MLA further informed that since he has been newly elected, he has a lot to learn with regard to politics.
However, he is not going to leave any stone unturned in bringing about development in the society.
He also appealed to the general public to give him suggestions in this regard.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the function, Laishom Ibomcha, MLA of Keishamthong A/C pointed out that since the government has failed to take up measures for promotion of library in the state, the sorry state of library has prevailed in the state.
According to the Manipur Public Library Act, 1993, every district of the state should have a library.
However, no proper library has been established in all the districts so far.
He further lamented over the attitude of the state government in missed out from preparing a separate budget for the Library in the annual budget of the state government.
Even the Department of Art and Culture never tried to develop and promote the library movement in the state.
As such there is no likelihood that a separate Directorate of Library will be set up in the state as is seen in other states of India.
MLA Ibomcha also pointed out that since the State Central Library is located in a parking zone, the people find it difficult to concentrate in reading books of their choice peacefully.
So, either the parking or the Central Library needs to be shifted from the area, he proposed.
Padmashree Dr M Kriti, RK Jhalajit and N Inaocha, President of Manipur Library Association were Guests of Honour of the function during which annual report of MALA and a souvenir were also released.

INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES

Generally to check the skills, experience, qualification, hobbies etc., an Interview will be conducted and to select a suitable and best deserved candidate for the position in a Company who can handle the job efficiently, independently.
Remember that the interviewer(s) are of great experience. They are fully acquainted with the nature of the duty and qualities required of a candidate for the particular job. They can judge a candidate’s capabilities from his words and expressions.
In this matter, the candidate must be well prepared to give the answer briefly, point-to-point, with suitable examples so that he can impress the Interviewer; The following are few techniques which are generally observe at the time of Interview;
1. There are generally two types of interview, (a) Verbal and b) Written.
 2. Be Confident, be Bold, be Polite, be Positive while facing the interview.
3. Your fear & tension are the main drawbacks in getting the job, so try to avoid it completely.
4. Soon after receipt the Call from the Company, you should prepare/revision the relevant subject matter.
5. Inquiry about the Company’s background and to whom interview at what exact time, date & Venue.
6. One day before the interview, visit to the said Company and know the exact location and collect some information about the Company, their main business activities, about Product, Service, how many branches, their locations, how many staff working (Technical/Non-technical), Salary range etc. complete so that, at the time of interview you will have more confident to give the appropriate reply.
7 Think that, you are going to attend the Interview but not to beg anything from the Interviewer.
8. Never claim false expressions of any hobbies or interest, actually you don’t have.
9. Don’t lie any matter at any cost, which leads to leave a bad impressions.
10. Dress smartly with combination tie, shoe (polished), cut the nails, use light scent/spray, combed well etc., Avoid strong scent/after shave lotion.
11. In case if you may have mouth-smell, then Pl. use mouth-refreshing tablets/syrup before interview. Advise not to use the onion, garlic & other food stuffs which give smells while speaking.
12. Reach the interview location at least half-an-hour in advance.
13. Wait patiently up to your turn comes in the Waiting Hall/Room. And don’t discuss any technical/subject matter with your colleagues this will loose your confidence.
14. Enter in the Interview Hall/Room duly knocking the door. Don’t enter the room neither very hurriedly nor very slowly. Normal pace and dignified entry must characterize the candidate’s appearance before the interview board.
15. After saying usual salutation like, Good morning/Afternoon/Evening as per the situation, give brief introduction and the reasons to come here, and don’t wait till the Interviewer to start the discussions.
16 Don’t shake hand until and unless the other side is offer first.
17. Occupy the seat quite normally - when the Interviewer requests you. And don’t forget to say him ‘Thanks’.
18. In case, if you wear a Hat or sunglasses take it off as you enter the Room/Hall.
19. Sit comfortably with more confidently and don’t keep any File, Testimonials, or Bag on the interview’s table. You should keep it down at your side.
20. Listen very attentively & carefully the question and give answer in natural & normal ways.
21. If you don’t understand the question properly, request him to repeat, tell frankly & don’t shame/hesitate here. If you don’t understand at all any question then, simply keep quite, don’t try to give false reply/information.
22. The First Impression is the Best Impression, so try to give good impression.
23. Speak in a soft but very clear tone. Your words should be well chosen. You should convey your ideas very clearly. Maintain the normal pitch and normal speed.
24. During interview, see the Interviewer’s eyes and give reply suitably.
25. The Interviewer read your body language, don’t bend so or don’t sit so comfortably freeing the legs, hands or shoulder, so be careful.
26. Keep the friendly & good atmosphere in the Room/Hall with smile face, and some-time laugh and don’t so close with the Interviewers, otherwise bad impression count.
27. Your every moment will be checked by the Interviewer.
28. Don’t complain against previous Employer/Co. at any stage, which give a negative thought on the Interviewer.
29. Some-times the Interviewer ask about why you leave the previous Co. what are the main reasons etc., so give appropriate and correct answers like; for bright prospectus or good working atmosphere etc., never say, salary not in time, not good Company, this will give again the negative points.
30. Apart from the subject matter, they may ask other general & social questions, so give the right answer.
31. Don’t keep any kind of mental tension while facing the interview, which leads to fail the interview.
32. Some-times, they may ask personal and general questions at a time, to confuse the candidate, so listen carefully and give one-by-one answer, & don’t loose your temper.
33. Advise to Rehearsal for Interview with your Master or friend, so that confidant will come and can face the interview in perfect manners.
34. Don’t ask any questions/quarries until and unless you have been requested.
35. Don’t ask first about the salary/package and other service benefits etc.
36. Memorize all the passing dates of Qualifications & Experience, sometimes they may ask, what you have mentioned in the CV.
37. Don’t play with the items place before the Interview’s table.
38. Don’t change your seating directions frequently; this will loose attention of the Interviewers.
39. Don’t blame your Fate, Fortune or your family background or financial matters; this will count another negative point on your part.
40. After Interview finished, leave the premises immediately, and leave a impression that, you have to attend another interview at another place.
41. Try to cover your weakness through the presentation of other achievements.
42. Develop your personality to suit the post for which you have applied.
