Lovely Public University launches country’s 'largest' library
Touted as country’s largest university, the Lovely Professional University (LPU) situated at Jalandhar in Punjab has launched what it claims as country’s largest high-tech campus library.
This nine-storey Central Library, with real equidistant approach for all the 25000+ students, has been erected spaciously on 1.5 lakh sq feet covered area, housing a rich collection of varied knowledge enhancing material. More than 1,02,846 text books, reference books, journals, magazines, audio, videos, CD-ROMs, research reports, online databases, data analysis software, in different areas and branches of all study-disciplines, are made readily available for its users, at present.
LPU Chancellor, Ashok Mittal informed that the knowledge center library is connected to research block which will make it very convenient for the researchers to utilize its strength. There are also separate group discussion rooms for students and staff members, which will provide all users an opportunity to explore world of knowledge in an environment of pin drop silence.
Ashok Mittal added that LPU wanted to develop reading habits amongst the students so that they become research oriented. Illustrative, the library is open 24/7 and has all basic facilities like cafeteria, washrooms, cloak room, xerox facility, Wi-Fi internet connectivity, reference service etc. All students and teachers, who join the University, automatically become its members.
The library is RFID enabled, where all the books have RFID tags, laced with multiple exits and entries, guarded by RF Gates. One step ahead, library has system for self check-in and check-out, where students can return the books, without any intervention of library staff. Also the software for this allows the students to check books, anywhere from the world; and, a request can also be made to hold the book for issuance.
Another unique feature is online resource-center with 400 computer terminals. Ashok Mittal said that this has been specially planned, as more information is readily available on internet, from where one can make extensive search. This can greatly help to generate information on-line and also to make access for on-line journals. Also, library being Wi-Fi enabled, the students can carry lap-tops too.

IAS section now at Madurai library
MADURAI: A new section for IAS aspirants has been thrown open for the public at the district central library in Madurai on Wednesday.
The internet-enabled civil service aspirants section, inaugurated by collector Anshul Mishra at the library premises in Simmakkal would have a whopping 25,000 books on varied disciplines. The section has diversified collection to enable students to prepare for preliminary exams for UPSC, railway board exams, bank officers selection exam, teacher recruitment board exams, State-Level Eligibility Test (SLET) and National Eligibility Test (NET) for college faculty and books for various other competitive exams.
The section would also have encyclopaedia, dictionary for several laguages. "These books are specifically chosen to meet the requirements of the aspirants. Students should make optimum use of the books," Mishra said.
Nearly 1.5 lakh books of the total 1.87 lakh books in the district central library in Madurai have been bar-coded for online tracking and renewal by borrowers while the work is on to barcode the remaining books also. "After the completion of barcoding, readers can easily renew the date for return of borrowed books online," said librarian Krishnaveni. She said that browsing will be introduced very soon in the library.
The foundation stone for the district central library functioning in two floors was laid by then chief minister M Bakthavachalam in 1965 and was inaugurated in 1970. On an average, about 500 readers visit the library everyday. "There are no sufficient chairs when a number of readers visit the library in the evenings and weekends. We want more chairs," said a reader Shanmugam from Goripalayam.
"There are two vacancies in the library for office assistants. The vacancies are not filled up for a long time," an employee there said.

‘We provide e-books to about 200 universities’- Jagdish Arora
IN THIS AGE when knowledge and information is passing through technological changes, Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), which is an autonomous Inter-University Centre (IUC) under the University Grant Commission (UGC), aims in providing all the Universities with academic resources. Jagdish Arora, Director of INFLIBNET tells Goter Gangkak about the organisation, the initiative that would help avoid plagiarism and the importance of e-books.
EDITED EXCERPTS
What is INFLIBNET? How did it all start?INFLIBNET was started out as a major programme by UGC under Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in 1991. It became an autonomous body in 1996. Since then INFLIBNET has been providing resources to universities all over India in the form of e-books and database.
How many universities or Institution comes under it? Is Delhi University also a part of it?
INFLIBNET provides educational resources to about 200 universities apart from more than 100 other institutions. Delhi University also comes under INFLIBNET but it lacks the basic infrastructure and sometimes faces the problem of excessive downloading.

What about the universities and colleges in rural areas? What are the major challenges you face in such universities
Mostly private universities sign up for access but we do provide resources to colleges and institutions in rural areas. Rural universities usually lack proper infrastructure. We provide basic infrastructure like setting up computer systems and educating the students how to use them in such universities.

Book sources say that e-books kill authenticity of print. Why do you support
e-books?
I believe an e-book is equivalent to print. If you compare the procedure that is required in creating an e-book, it is the same as print in terms of editing, proof reading and spell-check. Also, an e-book can help people with disability to read better in terms of visual elements.

What has INFLIBNET got in store for academicians?
We are working on a programme which will help academicians keep a check on plagiarism in their thesis and research works.

AMU Vice-Chancellor to reconsider Maulana Azad Library issue-Smriti Kak Ramachandran
Lt. Gen. Zameeruddin Shah, who has recently taken over as Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, is maintaining a diplomatic stance on the contentious issue of allowing undergraduate students from Abdullah Hall to use the Maulana Azad Library.
Lt. Gen. Shah says he has a blueprint for improving the condition of hostels, addressing the concerns of the students, and improving the standards of Abdullah Hall.
‘Room for change’
He also has first hand experience of how female students live in Abdullah Hall, the Women’s College of the University. His daughter was a student at Abdullah Hall and Lt. Gen. Shah, like other parents, had to meet her “outside the gates of the college”. While he is quick to point out that his daughter has “happy memories” of her year-long stay in Abdullah Hall, he admits there is room for change.
“We are still examining the issue [of allowing students into MAL]; if it can be done, it will be done. But MAL has space issues. It is overcrowded and more than 25,000 students use it. But we will see what we can do,” he told The Hindu .
The Hindu was the first to report in September 2011, about how undergraduate non-professional students of Abdullah Hall are being kept out of the MAL, despite repeated petitions from the students and the faculty.
The practice continues, even after the Union Human Resource Development Ministry has asked the University to make amends. Faculty members who have been leading the campaign for equal rights within the University are unconvinced about the logistical excuse cited by the authorities.
“We are hopeful that the new administration will rectify the past denials for the Women’s College students. These should not continue in the name of tradition. After all, students of Women’s College at least, as we know, had access to the University library till 1960s. The matters of logistics, if any, can be sorted out,” said Dr. Shadab Bano, of the History Department.
‘Poor living standards’
Students in the various hostels inside the precincts of the Abdullah Hall have also been complaining of “poor living standards”.
In September 2011, when The Hindu visited some of the hostels, the inmates complained of poor hygienic standards in the kitchens and the washrooms, and overcrowding in the hostels.
Admitting that the hostels are in need of an overhaul, Lt. Gen. Shah said: “We are going to give the hostels a total face lift. The kitchens will be modernised, we are aware there is overcrowding in the rooms and they are not very comfortable. There will be changes...” The University’s explanation about “creating a protective environment” for the girls is, however, criticised by a section of faculty and students.
“The girls should be given an option; whether they use the MAL or not should be their decision. Over crowding is everywhere, in hospitals, in trains, on the streets, but we cannot stop the women from stepping out. By preventing the girls from using MAL or keeping them closeted within Abdullah Hall, we are going against the spirit in which the College was set up - to encourage women to step out and get an education,” said Dr. A.K. Amitava of the Department of Ophthalmology, AMU Medical College.
Reacting to the complaints of restrictions for girls in Abdullah hall, the Vice-Chancellor said: “The restrictions are there because we have to keep in mind that a majority of the girls come from very conservative backgrounds. We cannot wish the restrictions away. I am in the place of their parents, and I have to do what they [the parents] would have wanted me to do. I believe in gender equality, but the environment and the background that these girls come from has to be kept in view.”
“There will be better interaction between students and administration. My wife will be a frequent visitor. We will see what the girls need and there will be as much liberty as is possible,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Devi Ahilya library fails to hit the high points
INDORE: Once humming with activities, a glorious landmark of the city appears to be moving towards fadeout time. The fifty-year-oldDevi Ahilya Government Library looks set to lose its way into a maze of books yellowing with age. Some of students TOI talked to, minced no words about library's "failure" to keep pace with the changing reading taste of students.
Renowned poet and a retired principal of Gujrati College Dr Saroj Kumar said library is not been keeping up to expectations of the people of the city. Thousands of books have yet to be sorted out and are just lying on rack in unkempt condition. Moreover, the place which was earlier allotted for research purpose has now been clubbed with the newspaper reading space. This has caused a lot of inconvenience to the people who want to do serious reading, he added.
There are people like Priyanka Bhende, an engineering student, who says that she is not aware of the government library.
"I usually purchase and get books issued from private libraries in Palasia, I never knew that a government library existed in Indore." Bhagyashree Joshi, a student from Renaissance College, says, "I strongly believe that the public library should stock books of youths' choice." She finds the stuff at Devi Ahilya government library "boring". With e-libraries gaining popularity, the demand for the government library has taken a beating.
Dr Jawahar Choudhry, an avid reader and visitor to the Devi Ahilya government library, who has seen the development of the library for the past many years said, "Students who are interested in reading books of different genre should provide the library a list of books that they want to be stocked, so that they can be made available."
G D Agrawal, the regional librarian of Devi Ahilya Government library says, "Our library is full of books of different types. The new generation does not visit the library and so is not aware about the books that are available here." The library has a collection of around 70,000 books of almost every subject catering to almost every class of the society, he said.

Library to aid research at Pondicherry Varsity, PUDUCHERRY
As part of the programme for exclusive libraries for each department, Pondicherry University vice-chancellor Prof JAK Tareen inaugurated a new library at School of Humanities and School of Social Sciences and International Studies on Thursday.
Three such school libraries have already been established in the last six months, the first being the one at School of Management followed by that at Subramania Bharathiayar School of Tamil Literature and UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of South Asian Regional Cooperation.
In addition, the Central Library named after Ananda Rangapillai, would continue to cater to all routine processes and digital library services.
Instead of every department having a library which is common at most of the universities, the concept of school libraries is unique because each reference library would be located at the school building itself. Books housed there are for immediate reference and in a serene air-conditioned ambience managed by qualified library and information professionals.
The university also has established libraries at the Karaikal Centre and at Port Blair which are offshore campuses of the university. The remote login facility created by the Ananda Rangapillai Library enables its members to access all its e-resources subscribed from anywhere in the world. This is again an unique digital library service to facilitate information access to researchers by the university library.
