IPv6 - is successor of Internet Protocol IPv4 that offers around 18 trillion IP addresses so much so that we can even assign our coffee maker its very own global address!

You would be aware that IPv6 implementation is a need of the hour as well as the mandate of the Government and its organisation. However being a new protocol brings with it a lot of challenges and need for enhanced skill development. ERNET India- Indian National Research & Education Network (NREN) had successfully transited to IPv6 about half a decade ago and has been empanelled by DoT and appointed nodal agency by DeitY for IPv6 transition in the government - are organising an IPv6 Workshop on 2nd May 2014 at IIT Chennai.  The workshop intends to enrich participants with what the other organisations are doing on this front, how they should proceed and the methodologies they should adapt in the form of presentations by eminent panelists.

The workshop would be followed by an exposure to the real world of IPv6 in the form of Hands-on training for those interested as well as in the some live demos of the opportunities that IPv6 brings to the civilization. The event is free of cost. This IPv6 Roadshow is perfectly weaved for Birds of Feather who share same enthusiasm about knowing knickknacks of IPv6 with ERNET India.

ERNET India recently conducted an IPv6 Roadshow cum Hands-on Workshop in New Delhi on 15 April 2014 which was a huge success and appreciated by all stake holders. This is the 2nd workshop being held at Chennai at IIT Madras on 2nd May 2014.

World Book Day: e-books ensure easy reading: Times of India

AHMEDABAD: The world over, April 23 is celebrated as World Book Day. Interestingly, what has gained significance in the last few years is the virtual form of books or e-books. Amdavadis are gradually but steadily vouching for e-books.

Kapil Kapoor of Roli Books agrees to the rising phenomena of e-books and has all their non-illustrated books in e-book format. "Yes, there is a rise in sale of e-books in India. With international players like Amazon, Kobo entering the market along with Indian players like Flipkart, it is set to grow even more."

An avid reader, college student Tamanna Shah factors in convenience as the game changer. "I don't have to carry a hard bound book or even a paperback anymore. A small device like a Nook or a Kindle can have in it hundreds of e-books. I can read sitting just about anywhere," she said.

"You can carry an entire library in a small device. It's easy to read, convenient to buy at the click of a button. e-books are great for such books that you want to read but not necessarily want to store in physical form," explained Kapoor.

However, many bookworms would beg to differ. Shreshtha Dave, 38, has been spending thousands of bucks on new books every month since college. "My kids keep telling me to download e-books because that's what the world is indulging in. But the feel of a book in my hands is something I just can't replace."

Students can benefit from e-books

e-books may not have reached every corner of India, simply because internet penetration is still isn't at its peak. That, along with device proliferation, where cheaper gadgets can become reading tools, will go a long way in making e-books a leading product in the publishing industry. "Universities and schools play a big role when it comes to choosing what books students study or read. They need to play an important role in helping students bring gadgets that will contain in them a world of knowledge," said Anish Srikrishna, senior VP, business head, higher education and test preparation, Pearson India.

World Book Day: 774 million people worldwide cannot read, says UN study

As the World Book Day is being celebrated across the globe, ebooks and other technological advancements seem to have an upper hand where the popularity of books is concerned. A study by the UN education agency says cellphones are getting more and more people to read in countries where books are rare and illiteracy is high. More shocking is the fact that 774 million people worldwide cannot read.
World Book Day dates back to a time in the early 20th century when booksellers in Spain decided to fete author Miguel de Cervantes and April 23 was chosen to mark de Cervantes' death on the same day. Later, the United Nations called for including other authors, such as Inca Garcilaso and Mejia Vallejo as well as William Shakespeare for celebrations.

Paris-based UNESCO says 774 million people worldwide cannot read, and most people in sub-Saharan Africa don't own any books but cellphones are increasingly widespread. The report on Wednesday by UNESCO says a large numbers of people in such countries are reading books and stories on "rudimentary small-screen devices," according to AP.

It says a third of study participants read stories to children from cellphones. It also says people who start reading on a mobile device go on to read more period, improving their overall literacy.
The study was conducted among 4,000 people in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The Communist Party Chief in Beijing Guo Jinlong appeared unannounced and served as a volunteer librarian at Beijing's Capital Library for an hour on Saturday ahead of the upcoming World Reading Day, the Beijing Morning Post reports.
The municipal party secretary made his low-key appearance at the searching hall on the second floor of the library, where he was seen helped readers use the library computers to search for books. He then went to a reading and borrowing room to arrange returned books in front of bookshelves with the help of other volunteers.
Guo worked as a volunteer for around one hour, during which time he remained unrecognized by readers.
Ni Xiaojian, chief librarian at the Capital Library noted that such displays of participation in library volunteer activities by municipal leaders may encourage more people to work as volunteers and inspire public passion for reading.
"The Capital Library has an average flow of 10,000 readers every day, while there are over 3,600 registered volunteers serving these readers", said Ni.
